Portuguese Laurel is a beautiful evergreen plant that has glossy green leaves all year round. The small delicate flowers that bloom in the summer are extremely popular with butterflies and bees. Flowering Currant is a deciduous plant but is a good sign of the impending Spring as the striking crimson coloured flowers appear well in advance of the leaves. The flowers are highly scented and are a good early source of nectar for bees and edible blue/black fruits follow in Autumn. So extra wildlife should hopefully be coming into your garden soon. Rosa Rugosa is a hardy, native plant. It is deciduous and will lose its leaves over autumn/winter, lots of healthy green leaves will have pushed through again and in summer they will produce gorgeous pink flowers that will attract lots of butterflies and bees and after flowering you will see rosehip fruits appear that will feed lots of hungry birds. In autumn the leaves turn brown when the plants become dormant for the winter. The plants hold onto these leaves and now the growing season has begun lots of healthy green leaves will have pushed through.
