We think we should note, for any beginners reading this, that the ascents can be quite a challenge - so make sure you're prepared! Once your legs are set for those climbs, we agree: the West Highland Way is an established trail that's well waymarked and full of other walkers, so it's a great way to enjoy some absolutely epic scenery.

Given the busy nature of the south of England, it seems impossible for the South Downs Way to be remote, but it threads its way cleverly through the hills to achieve that quiet character.

Thank you for your expansive feedback, particularly on The Horseshoe - I have passed that information along to our accommodation team to investigate. Maps are tricky to get right for everyone on these trails that span multiple OS sheets and don't have a good dedicated trail-specific alternative. Broadly we do advise carrying the day's relevant sheets with you on the trail as the most reliable form of navigation, but I note for anyone who is interested in the OS App mentioned here, the paper maps include a QR code that allows you to download that area to the app for free, so you needn't fork out for a subscription once you've received your Contours materials.
