The cold start to this year, that has been the second coldest in half a century impacted significantly on the appearance although not the underlying health of certain stock lines including some trees. I have discussed with our Nursery Manager details of the stock from which your tree was selected and he recalls he personally had pruned these and is confident they will all prosper. Thank you for your feedback. Due to the cold start to this year, that has been the second coldest in half a century the growing season is about four weeks behind. Therefore you may yet find all the Beech bare root plants will prosper although as detailed on our website a failure rate of 10% should be expected. I would suggest you scratch back with your finger nail, a small amount of bark on a number of plants and if these are healthy this should reveal a green and moist surface in which case please continue to water the plants and apply a feed to these on a regular basis. If the surface is dry and brittle the plants may have died, this can be due to a number of reasons including the watering regime followed. Please do keep us advised if the plants do not prosper and we can arrange to replace these in the next bare root season (October 2013 - April 2014), subject to you making a contribution towards the cost of doing so.
