The Blackthorn is a native, deciduous species, so your plants will have lost their leaves during winter, but they will now be bursting back into leaf and flower and will eventually produce berries. As the weather warms lots of new leaves will push through and in the summer they will produce masses of white flowers that will attract lots of butterflies and bees. Traditionally, Lonicera pileata isn't grown as a flowering or berrying hedge though it does have creamy white flowers in late spring and transluscent purple berries in autumn which are a good source of bird food. Trim in Summer and Autumn. Lonicera Pileata is suitable for shady sites, and most soil types including alkaline soil, but not wet sites. Over autumn/winter when the plants are dormant the leaves turn brown, and the plants hold onto these leaves. As the weather warms up again in spring healthy new green leaves will push through. The Leylandii is an extremely fast growing, evergreen conifer hedge, that can grow up to 90cm per year and are perfect for extra privacy and screening and they can provide cover for a variety of wildlife and due to the density can act as a windbreaker.
