During the spring they produce tiny white flowers that are popular with butterflies and bees and during winter they produce small red berries that hungry birds love. Privet is a semi-evergreen, which means the plants may lose some or all their leaves during a very chilly winter. In spring lots of new leaves will push through and in the summer they will produce masses of white flowers that will attract lots of butterflies and bees. Golden Privet is a semi-evergreen, which means the plants may lose some or all their leaves during a very cold winter. Lots of new leaves will push through again in spring and in summer they will produce creamy/white flowers that will attract lots of butterflies and bees. The Spindle (Euonymus europaeus) is known for its stunning colours in autumn, in which the bright pink capsules open-up to reveal bold-coloured orange fruits, and the leaves turn from a deep green to a glowing red and the fruits are often retained well into the winter months, even after the leaves have dropped. Although it is a deciduous hedge, Purple Beech hedging will retain some of its beautiful autumnal foliage during the winter.
