The plants will hold onto the leaves and then in spring new leaves will push through. Hazel has distinctive pale yellow fluffy catkins known as lambs tails appear from January to March and hang along the length of the bare twigs, not just at the ends. The catkins are accompanied by less noticeable flowers and it is important to retain some of both when trimming (in March) if the edible nuts are required. The nuts are fully ripe by about September/October, when they are harvested by squirrels. I hope you enjoy your new hedging and the wildlife it will bring to your garden. Golden Privet is a semi-evergreen, which means the plants may lose some or all their leaves during a very cold winter. Lots of new leaves will push through again in spring and in summer they will produce creamy/white flowers that will attract lots of butterflies and bees.
