Cotoneaster horizontalis is deciduous but it is in the winter that it is most remarkable. It has a herringbone pattern of stems which form a basketweave structure, dripping with berries on its dark wood. Butterflies and bees are frequent spring visitors and from autumn onwards the red, shiny haws are a good food source for thrushes, blackbirds, blue tits and yellowhammers.
