I do think that a general "thank you for your order" email should be sent though as I only got an email after my order was dispatched

I am sorry that you did not get the "thank you" confirmation email. We have been experiencing problems with the server that sends these.
We shall be launching a new site very soon and hopefully this type of problem will be solved.
