Sterling Silver will react with water particles in the air, which creates this darker coating which you are seeing in his necklace.
This is easily rubbed off with a silver polishing cloth which you can buy at your local supermarket, Argos, Ebay etc. Products like 'Talk of the Town silver polishing cloths' are usually £3 and will clean it all off.
A lot of sterling silver jewellery can be coated with rhodium which is why you probably didn't experience the rusting before. If any of our sterling silver is rhodium coated, we state this on our product description.
Rusting will get worse if the jewellery is stored for long periods of time or if you shower and bathe with it. Regardless, to keep your jewellery in tip top condition please follow the care instructions enclosed with your order and also regularly polish it using a soft cloth or a silver polishing cloth as advised.
