I was not able to connect this sound bar to my TV using an optical connection (not compatible with TV) thus was not able to use the soundbar and AirPods at the same time.

Thanks for your feedback! It sounds like you're looking to use your AirPods and the AV835 through your TV at the same time, and that's actually possible on most modern TVs. There's typically a setting that lets the TV output audio to multiple devices. For example, Samsung calls it Multi-Output Audio, LG calls it Enjoy TV Sound Together, and Sony calls it Dual Audio. Check under your TV's Sound or Accessibility settings.
If your TV doesn't have a setting like this, there's still a workaround. You can connect the AirPods directly to the AV835 using an inexpensive Bluetooth transmitter, which works great.

The unit turns itself off, sometimes as often as every 20 minutes. I Emailed zvox.com to complain and haven't gotten any reply. I am extremely dissatisfied.

Sorry to hear about the trouble you've been having. We did send a reply to your email, but it's possible it landed in your spam or promotions folder. It's worth checking there and making sure emails from us aren't being blocked.
As for the unit turning off, that's actually not a malfunction. Your speaker has an Auto Standby feature that powers it down when it isn't detecting a strong enough audio signal from your TV. Some TVs send a weaker signal during quieter moments, which can trigger the standby mode. The good news is you can turn Auto Standby off by making sure the speaker is on and working, then press and hold the power button until you see "NoAS" on the display, which should solve the issue right away.
