Thank you for the frank reply to my comments. What I wrote was not entirely the full story. When renewal came up last year the reminder arrived about two days before it was due, thereby giving me no time to explore the market myself as we were still heavily involved in getting the house back in order. I spoke to your office and was assured they would try to do better, but next day all I got was a fairly curt "That's the best we can do" put over in a 'take it or leave it' fashion. I had no option but to take it. This year, when I questioned the still enormously high premium, your representative gave me the quote about not having access to the special offers on comparison websites. Three other points were made during our conversation in March, which I didn't use yesterday but might as well do so today: first was, "Maybe it would have been better had you contacted AXA directly"; the second was, "It's very difficult for brokers", and last, when I questioned how the insurance market could offer so many different prices and conditions for premiums in so many different ways, I got the plaintive answer: "It's a minefield out there." At least that seemed honest! If the regulator is looking at practices within the insurance industry I do hope they come up with rules which make life for both brokers and members of the public much simpler and fairer. As for my experience of obtaining quotes myself, what I discovered and was told over two or three days of phoning around would make another story altogether.
