I followed the instructions, cleaned the kettle before use. It did not help. And, as I was contemplating returning (or getting rid of it) after two weeks (!) of boiling and pouring the water away, the weird taste and smell were finally gone. So the kettle is great, Bilbo Baggins vibe, very heavy but you can get used to it. Instructions might have been a bit better - it does take time to get rid of the smell.
