Thank you for your feedback. Please note as per Air Canada's website, web check in is available 24 hours prior to your scheduled flight at no cost. It's up to the airline how many seats they show as available, there is no charge for economy seats however other seats such as seats with extra leg room are nevar free. We are worry that you were not able to select the seat as preferred. Regards Customer Care
