Unfortunately, this can happen with people booking online at the same time. It's rare, but possible, to be pipped at the post. What can help is making a provisional booking as soon as you believe you will want the property, as we can hold the provisional booking for three working days for you at no cost and with no obligation. On a Sunday morning, of course, you can only do this online but from Monday to Saturday you can always call us instead, which would be a little quicker for you.
I'm sorry we didn't suggest any alternatives. We're always very happy to run an availability search for you, searching your particular requirements. I can only think that the person you spoke to believed that you had your heart set on that particular property.
If you paid with a debit card then we absolutely shouldn't have taken a card charge, so I'm very sorry about that. I wonder if you would mind getting in touch with me personally, so that I could access your booking details to find out why we did that and ask my colleagues in invoicing to organise a refund?
