One of Mendoza’s great viticultural treasures can be found in the picturesque old vine vineyards of La Consulta in the southern part of the Uco Valley. From vines planted in 1955, this old-vine Malbec is grown at 900m (3,000ft) altitude. With deep and indulgent forest fruit aromas and flavours, voluptuous cocoa and sweet spice notes and wonderful length, this is a terrific Malbec to savour and linger over. Ideal with grilled red meats or a slow-braised stew with lashings of rich sauce. Tinto Negro (Spanish for ‘black wine’) produces a range of wines from high-altitude sites around the city of Mendoza. This 900m (3,000ft) altitude helps balance freshness with the concentration from exceptionally low-yields. The vines produce around 600g (1.5lbs) grapes per vine from shallow sandy soils with limestone underneath which helps retain freshness and gives a slight saline minerality to the finished wines.Malbec with chargrilled or barbecued steak is an obvious pairing, though sadly there are fewer gauchos in this country to lend spice to the occasion. In Mendoza, steaks are often grilled over fires of vine cuttings, adding a unique flavour to the meat that pairs so well with Malbec. Tinto Negro: Uco Valley Mendoza Malbec \'Vineyard 1955\' 2019.
