This may have something to do with the eye-catching Charles de Gaulle label, but more likely is because this Saumur Blanc is a refreshing, fruity, bon marché crowd-pleaser that makes for an ideal aperitif or partner to salads. The chalky soils and temperate climate of Saumur and Saumur Champigny are ideally suited to viticulture and vines have been cultivated here since Roman times.The ever-dependable Cave de Saumur Co-opérative, based in Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg, has an unimpeachable track record of making keenly-priced, quality wines with plenty of varietal character and a fine sense of terroir.
