Penstemon Ice Cream Collection – Growing Instructions (July Delivery)
Your Penstemon Ice Cream Collection plants are supplied at a suitable stage for planting out or growing on. As they arrive during July, they may need a little care while they settle into their new surroundings.
On arrival:
Remove the plants from their packaging as soon as possible and water thoroughly if the compost feels dry.
Place them in a sheltered spot with plenty of light for a few days to allow them to acclimatise.
If the plants are small, grow them on in pots until they have developed a stronger root system before planting into their final position.
Planting position:
Choose a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil.
Penstemons prefer fertile soil that does not remain waterlogged, especially over winter.
Improve heavy soils by incorporating organic matter and grit to aid drainage.
Allow approximately 30–45cm between plants to give them room to spread.
Watering:
Keep newly planted penstemons well watered during their first growing season, particularly during warm or dry periods.
Once established, they are relatively drought tolerant and should only need watering during prolonged dry spells.
Feeding and maintenance:
Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.
Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage further blooms.
After flowering, lightly trim back stems to maintain a tidy shape.
In colder areas, leave some old growth over winter to help protect the crown and cut back in spring once new growth appears.
Winter care:
Penstemons are hardy perennials but can be affected by very wet, cold winters.
Avoid cutting plants back hard in autumn, as the old stems provide some protection.
A mulch around the base in late autumn can help protect the roots, but keep it away from the crown to prevent rotting.
With the right conditions, your Penstemon Ice Cream Collection should establish well and provide a long season of colourful flowers from summer into autumn.

Just a quick line to say thank you for the response to my review and the advice on propagation of penstemon which I have printed off for future reference. I would also like to thank Suttons for their email saying that they have dispatched a further 6 penstemon for me. I have recently taken a dozen cuttings from existing penstemon which I am attempting to probate using the water method. So with the 6 new plants and dozen cuttings, plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks.
