A delectable selection of sweetmeats: award-winning marrons glacés and pâte de Fruits, glacé apricots, marzipan fruit and walnut-stuffed marzipan, presented on a metal platter. Eaten as a dessert course, ‘sweetmeats’ were famously enjoyed by Henry VIII and, notably, the sugar banquet became a lavish spectacle at Tudor court. Staged to impress foreign dignitaries, such as at the banquet held at Greenwich in 1526, sugar banquets followed great feasts; guests withdrew to view intricate sugar sculpture and taste expensive sweetmeats of candied fruit and marzipan.
