Our indulgent, fruit-rich recipe is handmade in Shropshire and baked with sultanas, apple, apricots, figs, dates, walnuts and treacle. This fruit cake would make a delicious gift to a friend in a hamper as well as treat for yourself at afternoon tea. Enjoy on its own or, following the fine tradition of Lancashire and Yorkshire, it is even better enjoyed with a mature Cheddar or Stilton and a glass of Port. Fruitcakes began to emerge in the late 17th century among the wealthy, enriched with sweetness and dried fruit, and they remain one of Britain?s favourite cakes today.
