Hand-enamelled and crystal-set costume gingko brooch with faux pearl inspired by a detail from a 19th-century Chinese head dress. The gingko leaf has been a revered motif in Chinese art for more than two millennia, appearing in bronze vessels, embroidered textiles, carved jade, and painted scrolls. Its distinctive fan shape symbolises longevity, resilience, and enduring harmony, owing to the tree’s remarkable lifespan and its survival through periods of cultural upheaval. By the Qing dynasty, gingko forms were widely incorporated into court dress and ceremonial ornament, often worked in gilt metal, silk, and gemstone inlay.
