Fair Isle knitting originated from the eponymous Scottish Island situated between Orkney and Shetland, where there is a strong tradition for knitwear with knitters archiving their individual patterns. Loosely fitted, collared style with button front fastening and two front pockets. There is evidence that the distinctive design of Fair Isle knitted clothes are influenced by Scandinavia. Varied colours of Shetland wool have been a feature of knitting from this region since the 19th century. They came partly from the different breeds of sheep, but also dyes: originally madder and indigo gave red and blue, while lichens produced red, brown, orange and purple.
