Set of 6 pocket cotton handkerchiefs embroidered with floral motifs inspired by Victorian pattern books and floriography, including lily-of-the-valley and yellow rose. Throughout the Victorian era, the Language of Flowers flourished in England and the United States. Through gifts of floral arrangements and blooms, subtle and sentimental messages could be exchanged in a genteel manner. "Talking bouquets" or nosegays were a way in which these could be fashionably worn or carried by women of the era, whilst floral subjects in 19th century art captured popular notions of romance and beauty.
