As you have noted, your 16 year old would not be covered under a family policy as independent cover is excluded, and she is unable to take out her own policy as she is not an adult. As policy details change over time the policy terms and conditions when you first took out insurance for your family may have been different to the terms and conditions of your policy renewal.
