The machine copes well with privet, young hawthorn and berberis - when it is new and sharp! The handle interlock is rather sensitive (or insensitive?) so continuous cutting is not so easy.

The spool is easy to fit and has a decent length and thickness. It cuts the edges of the lawn very well, even through the thicker undergrowth. This is the second lot of two that I have bought.
