We try to arrange the most appropriate walking grade for our holidays, both to try to get the best walking programme for the nature of the terrain and to ensure participants have a good idea of what to expect in terms of the demands of the walks before they arrive. In adapting the walking grades of our programmes, we try to respond to the feedback we receive both from previous travellers and our tour leaders to either broaden a destination’s appeal or to specifically target a particular type of walker. The hybrid grades such as D/D+ or D+/C allow us to broaden the range of walks to include both those at the upper ends of the grade but also to be able to include less strenuous but remarkable walks we wouldn’t be able to do at a more specific single grade. In terms of accommodation standards, we are simply responding to feedback from previous travellers. There is a clear demand from the majority of those who travel with us for higher standard hotels than we used in the past. Previously walkers often simply sought a good meal and a clean comfortable bed for the night, increasingly holidaymakers demand more. Whatever we choose, we try to find welcoming and generally smaller hotels wherever we can, and particularly try to find a hotel which is sympathetic to its location and appropriate to the grade of the holiday. We do however still have a significant number of clients who prefer simpler (but still good) accommodation and we try to offer a programme to cater for everyone.
