Look for another course
I’m studying diploma level 4 which really needs some proofreading. There are numerous errors and typos in the text and when I have questioned some things I have basically been told that it doesn’t...

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry you have found some issues with typographical errors in the course material and some things not being completely up to date. We do update our assignments and course material every 2-3 years as a minimum, or more often when major changes occur, however, it is not always possible to do this immediately a change in law takes place. Where individuals have already started their course with us and a change of law occurs midway through their studies, it could cause a disruption to those studies and disadvantage them, particularly as this is a distance learning course. Despite our best efforts with proofreading, sometimes errors will slip through, for which we can only apologise. We have no objections to our students doing additional research and study via external texts. Clearly cited and referenced quotations from such texts, or from our own course material, is allowed by the awarding organisation who marks the assignments, however, they may reduce the marks awarded where such quotations are used in place of a learner’s own work, written in their own words. Also, if large amounts of texts are copied from either the course material provided, or external sources, such as websites, etc. and these are not cited or referenced, it is seen as a learner trying to pass this off as their own work which is plagiarism. Plagiarism is not allowed in any qualification and will attract an immediate ‘fail’ mark from the awarding organisation. We are happy that you have found the text to give you a solid base for your studies and wish you all the best for the future.

Thanks for your reply. I think you’ll find your plagiarism rules are standard across academic disciplines, that is not the issue. I have been told several times not to read other materials and stick to the text even when it is wrong (I know, I found this surprising too). I would also suggest that if you are marketing a course for over £1,000, professional proofreading & fact checking is a must most especially in a subject such as law which requires accuracy and clarity (not all the errors are typographical). I also find it rather hypocritical that you ask students for feedback on your course when you do not offer us feedback on our work. I would say feedback on a student’s work is a pretty basic requirement of an educational course. Finally, I would say I would have felt much more comfortable if my criticisms had been addressed properly when I raised them (as sensitively as I could) via email, rather than argued in a public forum. Perhaps some of time and energy spent marketing and defending the course would be better spent correcting it. I’m taking this course because I want to learn something, not to spend all my time having to question whether the text is accurate and arguing over the details which could so easily be corrected.

Thank you for getting back in touch. I am sorry if anyone has inferred that you shouldn’t read other materials as it is not our policy to discourage students from additional study or research. However, the content of the course material is dictated by the Awarding Organisation (NALP) as they set the assignments, based on the course material that they send us, and which is designed to ensure that students do not NEED to do additional study if they do not wish to. The assignments and course material are updated by the awarding organisation who then pass these to us. Because we work closely with them, we have some input into the reviews and so know the issues around the time it takes to get these done, etc. but when content is reviewed and how assignments are set are, for the most part, out of our hands. NPC is an approved centre of the awarding organisation and we do not make any assessment decisions or mark any assignments. All we receive from the awarding organisation are the marks. Where learners contact us asking for feedback on their assignment, we inform them that feedback is not provided by the awarding organisation. This is not unusual for some qualifications, for instance, students do not receive feedback on their GCSEs or A-Levels. However, NPC can, and does, offer tutorial support to students and can advise them where they may have possibly gone wrong, based on our knowledge of the content and the assignments, particularly on matters of assignment technique. We cannot provide you with specific feedback on where you might have lost marks on an assignment as we do not have that information. Whilst we empathise with your frustrations in respect of feedback from assignments, this is, unfortunately, out of our hands. We have passed your comments onto the Awarding Organisation. Thank you again for your feedback.
