What is the purpose of Tibetan prayer flags? The fluttering prayer flag (Lungta) are actually colourful cotton or polyester cloth squares. They are mantras and prayers on which are connected together along the top edges. Lungta (Tib: Lung = Wind, ta = Horse) A mythical Tibetan creature from pre Buddist times combine the speed of the wind and the strength of a horse to carry prayers from the earth to the heavens! The word Lungta for a Tibetan itself means fortune or good luck. Whilst cotton is preferred the lasting effect in Europe is by far not as good as polyester. Thus the transition to a better valued product as it last longer thus mitigating the constant replacement of cotton. However, both materials have environmental footprints that are taken into account when making these choices.
