Water vapour is always circulating in the air of any room of your home, this water carries allergens like dust, pollen, pet dander and even bacteria and viruses alike. Salt is hygroscopic, meaning it attracts water molecules from the surrounding air. A large block of rock salt, like a Himalayan crystal salt lamp, is especially attractive to water vapour and its attached pollutants. Once attracted to the lamp, these microscopic compounds remain on the salt and not floating in the air where you could previously breathe them in. The salt lamps slowly becomes saturated with this and the lamp warmth dries this. Salt Lamp Care Notes: Our salt lamps are intended for indoor use only. Cleaning: the rock lamp is required every 1-2 weeks with a damp cloth. They are for decorative use only and should not be left turned on if unattended for long periods. Keep the lamp away from excessive moisture of humidity (e.g. Cellars, Kitchens etc.). Physical features of these lamps are: A tendency to absorb moisture from the air. The lamp bulb heats the salt up and drives the water out again. We recommend using the lamp fairly frequently, if it is not regularly lit they can start crumble due to the moisture build up.This can happen more often in places where there's likely to be more water such as from condensation next to windows, conservatories or bathrooms. The lamp warms the salt minerals and removes the moisture from the salt firstly and then attracted it from the surrounding air, it then releases negative ions back. One of the main physical properties of these lamps is that they absorb moisture from the air. The Natural un-shaped lamps have a higher resilience to moisture than the softer carved versions. Care and maintenance: Place on a heat resistance surface. Make sure airflow is not hindered around the base due to an electrical component. Clean using a damp cloth only, do not apply cleaning products or immerse in water. The lamp might exhibit "sweating" on the surface - moisture is absorbed from the atmosphere by the salt and driven off again by the warmth of the bulb - a normal process that drives the air purification effect of the lamp.
