Beautifully-crafted, miniature marzipan fruit recall the decorative marzipan, known as ‘marchpane’, and other sweetmeat confections which reached a spectacular apogee at Tudor sugar banquets. Marzipan had been favoured as a medieval medicine, thought to promote sharpened wits and eaten as a popular pick-me-up but had become more decorative, with the moulded shapes and figures often imbued with allegorical meanings.
