Selous & Zanzibar

Service

Service rating : Everything on the UK end of the trip was fine
Product: The Selous part of the trip was excellent - the accommodation was fantastic and our guide was excellent. But the admin and behaviour of the agent on Zanzibar left a lot to be desired. He had booked too few rooms at the beach resort and then refused to speak to us in order to sort out the problem; we were transferred to another hotel on 23/12 (much hanging around plus a two hour drive) and then back to the first resort (which was eventually lovely) after being left in a state of limbo all day 24/12. We finally arrived at 22:45 for the special Christmas Eve dinner and were almost too tired to eat by then. It really spoiled the holiday - I felt as though I'd lost a day and a half of my trip!

Service rating : 'The tent with a view office' in Dar es Salaam needs to be overhauled.
Product: Arrangements in the Selous were excellent, the same could not be said for the Zanzibar section of the holiday.

Service rating : I found the customer service side very good, easy booking and payment options. The communication was good and the trip what was promised. So full marks on that. :)
I'll definitely be coming back for more.
Product: I immensely enjoyed my first ever trip to Africa and found the combination of 1 week Tanzania and 1 week Zanzibar just the right balance. The hotels were appropriate and the guides were there when needed, but didn't "baby-sit" us.

The only thing I'd like to mention is that I would have preferred more local cuisine rather than "colonialised British food".

Zanzibar & Selous

Service
Product

Service rating : Replied fairly swiftly to booking emails but as trip approached there was less urgency with the replies( seems they have your money and abit of customer service drops).

Also trip notes, packing lists etc need a really big overhaul, not much detail at all(not very helpful)

I had to contact airline myself regarding lay overs and transfers as no details are given by adventure company.

Overall easy to book but you still have to check and chase things, sometimes with no reply
Product: Absolutely brilliant, from arrival to departure the whole experience was faultless.
Yes a couple of delays but you are in a third world country.

Anyone in 2 minds, go and do this trip

Zanzibar & Selous

Service

Service rating : Very misleading info about the safari part of the holiday - only one full day of safari included in price - this was supposed to be the main part of holiday. Sunset cruise was a short boat trip with four people for an hour.
Product: Safari very disappointing as above - only one full day. Animal sightings very sparse.

Zanzibar & Selous

Service

Service rating : No complaints about Adventure Company, good itinery, good information on their website, good service all round.
Last year our holiday with them was cancelled due to lack of numbers on the trip, very efficient refund service so we had no qualms about booking with them again this year.
Product: The train from Dar to Selous was not running and it took 11 hrs by mini-bus to do the journey so not a good start.
Very few animals seen on safari in Selous.
The free day in Selous could have been another full day g/d so we could get further afield. Unfortunately there had been a number of forest fires just before we arrived so the game park that we were able to get to on a half day g/d was largely burnt so no animals around.
Would have been better to have a morning game drive before we left for Stone Town so giving us just 1 full day in Stone Town instead of 1.5 days
Stone Town was great to look around.
The hotel at the beach was great, but the restaurant was very poor, most in our group had stomach problems there. In all a good Hotel but poorly maintained and managed, staff were good.

Service rating : A recurring theme was the lack of correct information provided either in advance or during the trip by your company. For example, we should have been informed via the online itinerary that:

• The train from Dar-es-Salaam no longer left at 1pm but was scheduled for 4pm – which meant that we would not be able to enjoy the views of the countryside and wildlife as much of the journey would be in darkness.

• There was no information to inform us that travellers cheques would only be taken at the Sable Mountain Lodge, and that once in Zanzibar nowhere would accept them. This meant that we were running very short of cash, as we’d opted to take half of our spending money in travellers cheques which it turned out we couldn’t use or exchange. We'd originally opted to do this because of the obvious risks of travelling with large amounts of cash to cover five people.

Other communication issues we faced were:

• We were informed very casually (at the end of the first week of our holiday) that there had been a very serious fire at Nairobi Airport the day after we’d passed through. We were told by our guide Hassan that this had impacted other trips, and we'd probably need to fly back via another airport such as Mombasa. He also said that someone would confirm nearer our departure date what the arrangements would be – but no one did. The only way we could find the correct information was to go online ourselves!

• The departure tax information in the itinerary was $43 per person. When we realised how short of cash we were due to the travellers cheque issue, we called your emergency line to confirm the amount that we’d need (as there was no local representative to ask). We were told the amount was now $25 per person. But when we arrived at the airport it was in fact $48 per person – a total of $240 not $125! Luckily, because by this time we didn’t trust the quality of the information from your office (and were also considering possible delays in Nairobi) we held back a few dollars in case of an emergency. Actually, this only just covered the amount we required - which was lucky as we’d heard reports of tourists having to leave watches and other valuables to cover any departure tax shortfall at the airport!

Since we have returned from holiday we have written to your customer service to outline these issues sent on Saturday 24th August and to my knowledge have not had any response back.
Product: Although we had a fantastic time at the Slipway Hotel in Dar-es-Salaam, the Sable Mountain Lodge in Selous and also the Ras Michamvi Beach Resort in Zanzibar, we were generally very disappointed by the set-up in Zanzibar. Firstly, there was no single point of contact for this part of the trip. We were completely confused if the guides we were being introduced to in Stonetown were our personal holiday reps or just ad hoc guides. Although they were significantly more expensive than other equivalent tour guides (in total for the two additional trips, we paid an extra $75 out a total of $225), we decided we should use them because of their links with your company and our assumption that they'd be responsible for our welfare while in Zanzibar. However, they gave no significant additional value or support to us during the second part of the trip with any of the questions about our return via Nairobi, airport tax or travellers cheque situation. We simply had different guides taking us on different standard trips each day, none of whom knew anything about our ongoing holiday itinerary or plans.
For your reference we found Stonetown (even with our guides) a hostile unwelcoming place where we felt vulnerable as tourists in more ways than one:

• The day before our arrival there had been an acid attach on two British girls who were volunteering in the Stonetown. Our guides did nothing to reassure us about this incident or to for warn us of any dangers we might encounter
• Locals in the market and shops tried to overcharged us repeatedly for basic items such as fruit and water (up to five times more than the tourist rates for items) while the guides stood by and did nothing to help or support us
• We unfortunately had our camera stolen from where my son was sitting looking after our possessions on the beach on Prison Island. We believe this was by a professional gang of petty thieves who sat down and talked to him for a while about English football, distracting him while other members of their team subtly pilfered our belongings. If the guide had have stayed nearby (and given us the personal service that we expected by paying a premium of $10 per person for this trip) he could have prevented this from happening. He did take us to the police station, but we were still very upset – and there was no follow-up or support from anyone from your company to check that we were ok and reassure us for the remainder of our trip.
• Our negative perceptions of Stonetown were compounded by the poor attitude of the staff at the Dhow Palace hotel when we checked out. They tried to charge us for a $50 meal we’d not had, then argued about it - implying we were lying and that our children must have ordered the food. They also refused to take currency we’d been just given from the bureau de change because it had a slight tear in it! This was on top of general surliness of staff that we’d experienced throughout our stay. For example, when we arrived we were given a twin room instead of a double for us, and a room for our three adult children which included a very uncomfortable-looking camp bed. And at breakfast, we were told the only table available was one which was actually being hit by the morning rain. We will shortly be mentioning our experiences relating to this hotel and its service on Trip Advisor and your website, so that other travellers are aware of the issues they may face.

We did make contact with Abraham (the first of the 3 guides in Stonetown) the day after to talk through our experiences and check the plans for the rest of our trip, but when I began to explain some of the negative experiences we’d had, he simply hung up and made no effort to get back in touch!

By this time we were feeling very deflated and, quite frankl,y were almost ready to call your office and ask to be flown home. However, the service we received at the Ras Michamvi Beach Resort was simply excellent, and went a long way to make up for the bad experiences we’d had in Stonetown. We felt terrible that after being given such a fantastic time, we were unable to give them a suitable tip. This was because we were worried that we’d need to keep a significant emergency cash fund in case the information about the departure tax was wrong or we had an issue at Nairobi Airport – the first of which proved to be correct!

Having paid well over £15,000 for our two-week holiday for 5 people, we expected to receive a high quality of service throughout. We believe that many of the negative issues we experienced could have been avoided if the information and organisation provided by your company had been better.
