Family Sailing Thailand – The Adventure Company TTSFS
The Gale Family: July 30th-Aug 9th 2014

What was most inspiring about your trip?
Meeting Mike Forbes, Dodo and Mem, the fantastic crew who went out of their way to give us an amazing experience. They were, extremely hard working, resourceful and adaptable. They could not have been more helpful. It was a real privilege to meet them and spend time with them.
Sailing in a beautiful 52 ft Catamaran around exquisite tropical islands
Snorkelling amongst the coral and tropical marine life, away from the crowds in stunning surroundings
The joys of paddle boarding and kayaking
The magnificent caves and spectacular viewpoint over the Ang Thong Marine Park
The fabulous food on board and in the local restaurants, including the baraccuda, caught for us by the skipper and barbecued on the boat.
The evocative sights and sounds of old Bangkok
The moments of utter happiness we saw in our children

What did you think of your group leader?
We had complete confidence in Mike Forbes, our skipper. He was incredibly hard working, paid great attention to detail and had the respect not only of our family but also of the crew. It was a very happy, well-run boat. The crew were attentive to our safety and enjoyment, and were happy to teach us anything we wanted to know. We felt we were in the hands of an expert and a superb role model for our children.
Our guide in Bangkok was Gof, who we also enjoyed meeting . She was friendly, adaptable, knowledgeable, and was helpful in arranging a boat tour rather than a walking trip for our jet-lagged kids.

Tips for future travellers
It is very difficult to find or give feedback for Intrepid trips. It very nearly put us off booking with them – this would’ve been a mistake..
This trip was perfect for our age children (10 and 12) and I think it would also suit teens very well. It is advertised for aged 5 and up, but unless the child was very experienced with sailing in large sailing boats, I’d’ve been very nervous of taking a 5 year old. The layout of the boat (Simile) and the hazards on deck were more suited to older children. For example, cabins for parents and children were on opposite sides of the boat. If children became nervous or unwell in the night, parents wouldn't know unless the child left their cabin to come and find parents, which could be hazardous in the dark. Some of the cabins can be accessed only by hatches which are on the convex surface of the front deck. Not something you'd want a young child to do on their own in windy conditions or in the dark. The deck has inevitable trip hazards and it would be easy for a young child to injure themselves, or even to fall into the sea, particularly in high winds.
The sea is the play ground for this trip, and unless the child was confident in water they could find the boat very confining.
You'd need to be reasonably active to make the most of this holiday. It involves lots of water activities, and the land trips involve scrambling over rocks, and 450m of steep climbing. I was surprised it was described as 'gentle' in the activity notes.
The advert for this trip stated that this would be on a monohull boat - fortunately we hadn't read this properly or we wouldn't' have booked. It turned out to be on a much more stable and suitable catamaran, which is important for family sailing.
The tours around Bangkok on day 2 were lengthy for jet-lagged children.. The morning was excellent We were glad our guide agreed to arrange a long tail boat tour for us in the afternoon rather than walking. The tour could've ended at this point, going on into china town afterwards was tiring.
We'd've paid for an extra night at the Viengtai hotel in Bangkok if it meant we could get into our room to sleep as soon as we arrived in Bangkok. The waiting around from 8.30 to 11 in the morning was uncomfortable as the staff (understandably) didn't want us all snoozing in their lobby!

This was an amazing trip, one we’ll never forget. We are really looking forward to doing other trips with Intrepid/Adventure company in future.
