I was very impressed by the whole of the Pura Aventura arrangements and delivery of what was a fantastic 6 days from Cusco to Machu Picchu.
Carlos the guide was excellent as were the Chef and the Porters.
I would have no hesitation recommending the Pura Aventura way of traversing the Inca Trail and in fact have already done so more than once.

Thank you so much for your fantastic comments, and highlighting the fact that we do things on the Inca Trail that little bit differently! Thank you for passing on the word down-under, it's appreciated.

Delighted to hear that you had such a good time on your holiday. The 'colourful' border crossing from Nicaragua to Costa Rica with its fixers and vanishing queues is always such fun to hear about! I'm particularly pleased that you enjoyed the unspoiled nature of Nicaragua, it's not a place many people get to see (yet!). Thank you again for your kind comments.

Service rating : Ease of communication especially as I was already away traveling , it could have been tricky but was all good and questions answered as soon as possible etc. really good customer service. I went through David Orrock initially, was excellent!
Product rating : All but one accommodation was excellent. Have already fed back which one was dates and not great for solo travelers but it did not impact on my trip, was still fine, just not as good as the other places. All else excellent! Would highly recommend Pura Aventura!

I'm delighted that you were so well looked after by David and by the team out in Chile. Your feedback on the hotel in the Lake District is very helpful though of course almost anywhere suffers in comparison with the Atacama Desert & Torres del Paine! Thanks again for taking time to write down your thoughts.

Service rating : Particularly liked the linking of the 4 separate parts of the experience - cloud forest, Amazon Napo, Amazon Nenkepere, Galapagos. All drivers and guides on time, courteous and knowledgeable. Hotels high standard. Appropriate info provided re tipping etc. Yacht Beluga high standard incl food (3 meals a day too much!) and the staff great fun including laying on whales and dolphins for the final 24 hrs!
Product rating : See above, a great experience to be repeated. General impression of Ecuador was most positive with friendly helpful locals and v tasty guinea pig. The only downside was the undeniable presence of the oil companies in conflict with the preservation of the Amazon environment, including the native peoples - we should support the Amazonian tribes in protecting their lands and petition the Ecuadorian government to strictly curtail the oil companies explorations.

It's lovely to hear that you had such a great time in Ecuador, most particularly that the crew on Beluga magicked up marine mammals for you! Also probably worth pointing out to readers that the Amazon Nenkepere area refers to the Huaorani people who run a great community/wildlife/nature experience but who don't shy away from shining a light on the activities of the extractive industries in the Ecuadorian Amazon. It's a sobering experience for all of us who have been lucky enough to meet the Huaorani. I'm delighted that you enjoyed it all so much, thank you.

Costa Rica holiday

Service rating : Thomas was excellent putting an itinerary together for us for 12 days in Costa Rica. We gave him an outline of the kind of things we like to do and the kind of accommodation we prefer and the whole trip surpassed our expectations. He was extremely patient and flexible with us every time we communicated.
Product rating : Costa Rica is a beautiful country. We wanted to visit both the rainforests and beaches, so we decided to do a driving holiday and left the planning to Thomas. We have 3 teenagers, so we upgraded the car to a larger 4 x 4 toyota which we were very happy about. We white water rafted into our first lodge - Pacquare - in the middle of the beautiful rainforest with very little electricity. It was pouring with rain initially and a little cold so we were so happy with the really hot solar powered showers. We went to bed by candlelight in beautiful rooms which had no glass on the windows - mosquito nets kept the bugs at bay and we felt like we were sleeping outside, and we woke to the sounds of the howler monkeys and wildlife. The food and staff here were incredible and the zip lining and kayaking so much fun. We had to white water raft for 26k to leave the lodge (our guide was very good and fun and the weather beautiful by now). We were quite tired by the afternoon when we picked up the car. Driving instructions were perfect and the next lodge we visited was Rio Celeste near the Arenal volcano - a beautiful haven, close to the turquoise (literally) Celelste river. We did a long hike on this day and relaxed in the evening by the pool. Our next and favorite stop for a few days was Luna Azul - a beautiful boutique hotel overlooking forests and close to beaches. Interestingly, we had been asking Thomas to try and get us into a different hotel which was already booked up because a friend had recommended it to us, but Thomas assured us that we would love Luna Azul, and he was right - it was actually better than the other hotel . We were very grateful for his insight. The owner, Rolf organized boat trips to swim with the turtles and again the food here was delicious. Last stop was Punta Islita, a beautiful resort with amazing surf. It was much more touristy and busy here but again the staff were great. The kids loved surfing and boogie boarding in the huge waves and zip lining, and the weather was sunny and hot. Overall, the staff, food, driving directions, activities, accommodation, guides, planning etc etc throughout the whole trip were really perfect and we will definitely be booking our next trip with Pura Aventura.

Why thank you, I'm delighted that you had such a great time, not least because you came to us through recommendation from one set of friends and had lots of good local advice from another set of friends. Finally, there is the North Carolina connection (my wife's from NC) which made the pressure to perform intense! Of course, it was Costa Rica which actually performed, it's such a great place and I can take absolutely no credit for that.

I love that you have given such detailed feedback on the places you went, it will hopefully be very helpful for others considering a holiday to Costa Rica. Thank you for taking the time and I very much look forward to getting to work on your next trip!

Thomas

Costa Rica holiday

Service rating : Pura Aventura always got back to very promptly; offering excellent advice and written information.
Product rating : We spent almost 3 weeks in Costa Rica and were extremely impressed with the stunning and diverse landscape, flora and fauna. The trip was well organised from start to finish; it was useful having Costa Rican Trails as a point of contact, if required. You have sourced fabulous accomodation; throughout it was was first class; from a riverside lodge without electricy to a classy boutique hotel.
There a just a few pieces of advice we would give to anyone else going on this trip. Pack accordingly [we did] as when it rains boy does it rain, even in the dry season. We were astounded how many people were purchasing what appeared to be plastic capes/jackets.
When we left San Jose it was neccessary to leave our main case as luggage on the rafting trip was limited. We were assured the case would be in the hire car which we were due to collect 6 days later, and it was. It transpired we could have had the case put into storage by the Pacuare Lodge folk and had it back 2 days later. This is only an issue because the bags transported in 'dry bags' on the river did not remain 100% dry plus naively we thought that over the 5-6 days we would be able to dry items on the balcony'porch overnight. But of course in this environment that isn't the case and the fact it rained every day didn't help. This added to rather detracted from our adventure!
It would be worth letting people know that if they opt for a third night at Evergreen Lodge, Tortuguero you are treated to some extra 'special' food. We didn't know this and having already eaten were surprised to be presented, by a beaming waiter, with a platter of grilled chicken. We politely tucked in and were prepared for further special treatment that evening at dinner.
A 4WD is a must; ours was fine but having covered a fair few miles on the roads around Arenal and Ostional a higher spec car would possibly have been preferable.
All in all a fantastic trip. Thank you.

Wonderful, thank you and thank you too for the additional advice. I must admit, the' double meals' at Evergreen are a surprise to me too and perhaps a sign that they particularly liked you! As for rain, it does always rain somewhere in Costa Rica but I have to say that this February/March it has been unusually wet which probably made the roads around Arenal a bit muddier than we'd normally expect in the 'dry' season. I'm delighted that your positive attitude and sense of adventure was rewarded with a fantastic experience.

Andalucia & Madrid Holiday

Service rating : David was very patient as we changed our plans constantly for a few weeks before we finally put them all into place. Pura took care of every little detail for us and planned us a delightful vacation.
Product rating : Andalucia is an undiscovered treasure. Wonderful place to take a hiking vacation. In Seville, Pura arranged for us to spend a day with Manny, an expert on all things Sevillian and a wonderful guide. He took us to hidden treasures, explained the culture of the city and was a please to be with all day. We also enjoyed a day with Blanca in Madrid, where she tailored our tour to accommodate our unique requirements. The walking tour through Andalusia was fantastic, too.

David's a black belt in patience but it's his & our job to make sure you have the best vacation. Sometimes that takes a bit longer to plan. It's wonderful that you enjoyed the walking in Andalucia but also great to hear how much you got from your tours in Seville and Madrid. These off the beaten track city tours are a new part of what we do, designed to complement the walking and delivered by people I've known and worked with for more years than I care to mention! I do hope you are able to come and explore more of Spain soon.

Product rating : we were away a whole month, so lots of room for error! Overall we were delighted with the choices and service. Service rating : This was our fourth holiday with Pura Aventura and the service provided has been of consistently excellent quality. The advice provided on where to stay, activities available etc is extremely helpful and all of the flights, hotels, excursions, pick-ups etc have worked perfectly. Crucially for services provided locally, Pura also work with very reliable and efficient local travel companies. We had to make late changes to our flights and car hire due to a strike by Iberia Airlines but this was all handled efficiently and without any fuss by Sarah and her team.
Product rating : A wonderful holiday! Tailor-made to suit what we wanted to do and the advice provided by Pura was excellent - all of the hotels suggested and areas to visit suited us perfectly. The suggestion to include Mallin Colorado in Aisen and to do the cruise from Punta Arenas to Ushaia was particularly appreciated!

I'm so pleased that you enjoyed Central America so much and that the content and pace of your holiday worked for you. As you discovered, Nicaragua is still such a 'new' place to visit that people who do go there tend to get a huge amount from being there, if nothing else because the locals are so happy to have tourists and proud to show off their country.

Ski holiday

Service
Product

Service rating : Brilliant organisation. Delivered even better service than advertised.
Product rating : First full family ski holiday. We did not want separate ski schools so this really fitted fitted the bill. Terrific ski location in very unspoiled village. The slopes were clear of other skiers for the majority of the time which meant we all progressed quickly and safely with the almost personal guided tuition from Jamie and Anna.

I'm so glad that you and your family enjoyed yourselves so much. It's also particularly pleasing to hear that you felt that the service was more than you expected. Thank you.

As for Cerler being the special place it is, we just keep praying that it stays the way it is. Pre-crisis there were grand plans for extending the resort into the next valley which would then connect it to the French side of the border and motorway from Barcelona. Of course there would be economic benefits to Cerler but it would change the spirit of the place and (selfishly) none of us wants that.

Thomas

We can't imagine going anywhere else or with another company to ski.
This is our 5th year in Cerler.

The personal service both at the Pura office and at the resort with Jaime is second to none. Cerler is a beautiful, quiet and friendly place....we even now know a number of the restauranteurs who always give us a warm "welcome back". Huge steaks cooked on an open fire/grill, with delicious regional wines, just one of our favourite places. Probably not the best for vegetarians though.

Each year we look forward to seeing both Jaime and Ana who are somehow succeeding in making us better skiiers !!

This is the perfect family ski.....

I can but say thank you both for your feedback and your constancy!

Very good planning the trip. Poor resolving a problem that occured the last day of thevtrip.

I'm disappointed to read this feedback, particularly in the light of your own highly positive feedback immediately after your Galapagos cruise:

"I'm back in quito after a wonderful 8 day trip on the chacalote. The boat was great, the crew fine, excellent naturalist/ guide. Also excellent food & interesting iteniery.

The one downside was that on the last day we went snorkeling in a area that was somewhat rough, & i not Being a powerful swimmer got into a little trouble & lost a flipper. Another person also lost a flipper. I have no problem paying for something i lose, but they charged each of us $56!! Outrageous for 1 or even a pair of flippers! It shouldn't be more than $10, maybe a little more. You should look into this as it gave us a bad feeling at the end of a terrific cruise. That is, for the future & compensation for me now. Looking forward to hearing from you."

That's the email received, verbatim. We have since been in touch with not just the office of Cachalote but the owner herself to make representations on the client's behalf. Our approaches have not been successful.

In summary, when clients did not have personal responsibility for the care of their gear, losses were commonplace. Now that clients have that direct personal responsibility, gear losses have reduced dramatically. On board this boat the crew are responsible for the care of the gear and it would therefore be them subsidising the purchase of replacement fins.

I have personally checked that $56 is a reasonable sum for fins in Ecuador. Strange as it may seem to some of us, it is very much in line with current prices. There is no punitive element to this charge, it is simply the cost of replacement, no more and no less.

We would normally assume these charges as a goodwill gesture to the client. In the light of the fact that we have not been given the opportunity to reply to this client in full, there will be no such goodwill payment in this instance. Instead I have donated the $56 to the Galapagos Conservation Trust.

Overall the holiday was good. Some parts were excellent (the hotel in Atacama) and trip on Stella Australis, the Lakes/Andes and Bariloche also. They found a couple of hotels I probably wouldn't have which were very enjoyable and different.

A couple of my particular wishes did not come to fruition - one I believe the incorrect tour was booked by operators, the other I should probably been more insistent and gone with my instinct and not accepted other advice. Just means you need to be very specific with any particular desires. The lady in their office was very efficient.

Thank you for your feedback, I’m delighted that overall you had a good time, and particularly pleased to hear your excellent feedback on the Australis cruise and Atacama. In the latter it was especially good to hear that you were so happy with the guides, this is a recurring theme amongst our clients!

I am also pleased you found Sarah to be efficient. She manages our operations so I would be worried if you found her to be anything but efficient. At Pura we do have a dedicated operations team who look after the delivery of your holiday and that is completely separate from the sales side. I am pleased that worked for you.

However, we were all disappointed to hear that your wishes were not quite as fulfilled in every part of your holiday. It seems there was an element of ‘crossed wires’ in communication around the day trip to the glacier, as we have discussed in our recent correspondence. Again, apologies for this.

As for the walks you wanted to do in Torres del Paine, yes, it would have been great to know about those in order to advise you as well as we can. Insistence is usually the best way in these circumstances (exacerbated by the very tricky late availability over the Christmas/New Year) to make sure we're on track.

We do genuinely appreciate your taking time to send your feedback as it helps us continue to improve.

I usually plan and arrange all my own travel, rarely if ever using travel agents. I contacted Pura Aventura to arrange a special Christmas and New Year holiday in Chile. Planning, communication, attention to detail, responsiveness, real experience of the areas we were travelling to, good local contacts, and an enjoyable sense of humour and reality were features of planning this trip. Every detail was meticulously planned and arranged and the trip went like clockwork. I have nothing but compliments for Pura Aventura and I am the world's skeptic of the value added of travel agents. Trust me, these guys are good!!
